Add Line Numbers
Add Line Numbers prefixes every line of your text with a running number, so lists become references: 'line 14' suddenly means something. Choose where numbering starts (handy when a list continues from a previous page) and the separator between number and text — a dot, a colon, a bracket, your call. Blank lines can keep or skip numbers, your choice.
How to use Add Line Numbers
- Paste your text into the box, one item per line.
- Set the starting number and the separator that follows each number.
- Decide whether blank lines get numbers too.
- Copy the numbered result.
Supported behavior
- Numbering follows your lines exactly — nothing is sorted or reordered first.
- The separator is free text, so '1. ', '1: ', '1) ' and '[1] ' are all possible.
- Skip-blank mode leaves empty lines empty and does not consume a number.
Best for
- Numbering agenda items, lyrics and meeting minutes.
- Referencing lines in a shared document during review.
- Preparing numbered lists for print or import.
Limits
- Removing the numbers again is a manual job — keep the unnumbered original if you might need it.
- Numbers are plain text, so editing the middle of the list later will not renumber automatically.
Privacy notes
- Your text is processed locally in your browser and is never uploaded to a server.
- Your list is numbered locally in your browser.

Add Line Numbers FAQ
Can numbering start at a number other than 1?
Yes — set the start field to any whole number, which is useful when your list continues from an earlier document or page.
What separator should I use?
A dot ('1. item') is the classic list style. Use a colon for logs and references, or brackets ('[1]') when the numbers need to stand apart from the text.
Do blank lines consume numbers?
Only if you let them. With 'Number blank lines' off, blank lines stay blank and the count continues with the next real line.
