Unlock PDF

Unlock PDF removes the password protection from a document when you know its password, producing a copy that opens without prompting. Decryption is done by the qpdf engine running in your browser, so the password is typed into your own device and nowhere else. This is a convenience tool for your own files — it cannot and does not guess or crack passwords you do not know.

How to use Unlock PDF

  1. Choose or drop the password-protected PDF.
  2. Type the password that opens the file.
  3. Click Unlock PDF.
  4. Download the copy — it opens without a password.

Supported behavior

  • Works on PDFs protected with a user (open) password or an owner password, as long as the password you enter is correct.
  • Content is decrypted exactly — pages, images and text are bit-for-bit the document inside.
  • A wrong password produces a clear message, not a corrupt file.

Best for

  • Removing the prompt from statements you open every day.
  • Preparing a protected document for tools that cannot read encrypted files.
  • Consolidating protected exports into an archive you control.

Limits

  • You must know the password. This tool does not recover, guess or brute-force forgotten passwords.
  • Only unlock files you own or are authorized to modify — the tool trusts you on that, as it should.
  • A small number of files use non-standard encryption from old software and may fail with an explanatory error.

Privacy notes

  • Your PDF is processed locally in your browser and is never uploaded to a server.
  • Both the file and its password stay on your device; the decryption key never crosses a network.

Unlock PDF FAQ

I forgot the password. Can this tool recover it?

No. Unlocking requires the correct password, exactly like opening the file does. Check password managers, the sender, or the service that issued the document.

What happens if I type the wrong password?

The engine reports that the password was incorrect and no file is produced. Nothing is damaged — try again with the right one.

Is the unlocked copy identical to the original document?

The content is: decryption unwraps the same pages and resources. The file bytes differ because the encryption layer is gone, which is the point.

Why would I unlock a file instead of just typing the password?

Because some tools — mergers, compressors, some printers — cannot work with encrypted files at all, and daily-use documents are simply easier without a prompt on every open.
