Cornell Notes Template

Cornell Notes Template prints the study layout developed at Cornell University: a narrow cue column on the left for questions and keywords, a wide notes area on the right for the lecture itself, and a summary box across the bottom that you fill in afterwards — the step most students skip and the one that makes the system work. Add an optional lesson title at the top and print a page that turns passive notes into active revision material.

How to use Cornell Notes Template

  1. Set the paper size and margins, and add a lesson title if you want one printed.
  2. Check the live preview — it redraws as you change any option.
  3. Download the PDF for printing, or the PNG if you want an image of the page.
  4. Print at 100% scale (no 'fit to page') so the spacing stays exact.

Supported behavior

  • Labeled sections: Cues, Notes and Summary, divided exactly as the Cornell system prescribes.
  • The notes area is faintly ruled (you can switch the ruling off for a blank notes space).
  • The cue column takes roughly 30% of the width — wide enough for questions, narrow enough to force them to be short.

Best for

  • Students turning lecture notes into revision questions.
  • Teachers issuing a standard notes format for a class.
  • Anyone studying for exams with the recall-and-review method.

Limits

  • The template prints the structure, not the study method — the summary box only helps if you actually write it after class.
  • Print at 100% scale so the column proportions stay as designed.
  • One page per download; print a term's worth from one PDF.

Privacy notes

  • Your entries never leave your device: the printable is drawn and downloaded entirely in your browser, with no server involved.
  • The title you type is drawn into the page on your device only — it is never sent to a server.

Cornell Notes Template FAQ

How is the Cornell method meant to be used?

Take notes in the right-hand area during class. Afterwards, write questions and keywords in the cue column that the notes answer, then cover the notes and test yourself. Finally, write the summary at the bottom in your own words.

Can I turn off the lines in the notes area?

Yes — untick 'Rule the notes area' for a completely blank notes space, which some people prefer for diagrams and maths.

Why is the cue column on the left?

That is the original Cornell layout: cues where your eye lands first when revising, notes to the right, summary sealing the page at the bottom.

What paper size do students usually print?

A4 in most of the world, Letter in North America. Both keep the same column proportions; A5 makes a compact revision booklet.
